The other exciting news (and a little scary) is that the Trustees of Reservations liked my proposal for the 8 acres of farm land that they want to lease. I met with Ellie, my contact there yesterday and walked the land. The entry to the 3-acre parcel is wet so that would not work. I would need to take water and hay out to the land with a truck and that parcel looked too wet to drive into. However, the 5-acre parcel, plus a narrow 1-acre strip that leads up to it, look like nice land. I now need to fire up Excel and figure out costs and break-even.
After visiting the land, I realized I was starving and went to Elmer's on Main Street for an early lunch. Nan, the owner, was there and we started talking. When I told her about this opportunity, she looked at me wearing a kooky expression and said, "You got sheep and this free land opened up? What is there to think about? Just jump in and do it!"
Of course, Nan is a great jumper: She used to be a well-known graphic artist in New Orleans, visited Ashfield one day (no idea why), saw that Elmer's Store was up for sale, and bought it. She pulled up stakes and moved to Ashfield just before Katrina hit New Orleans. Changed from doing graphic arts in a major city to running a breakfast joint and small grocery store in a tiny Western Massachusetts highlands village and never looked back. Nan would be a good person to break up the logjams I can create in my head, with arguments to "yes" and "no" forever colliding on the same spot.
On the Whole Foods front, my nutritional labels are ready; I am about to get a quote for liability insurance; Anna, the graphic artist is developing a logo; a batch of the products just went to the lab for moisture testing and shelf life study; I found an elegant and inexpensive box for packaiging, an whoooo!!!! We are off and running. And now here comes the first log for the logjam-in-the-head: Can I really do both the new pasture and more sheep, and all the demos and the what-not one needs to do, to launch a product? OK - I am nicely immobilized now. It is starting. Naaannnn!!!!!
